Know before you go:

Macedonia Church

While the Preserve has a parking lot, it's best to have AWD or 4WD to make it all the way. If you're not able to drive up, no worries! You can park at Macedonia

Church on Macedonia Church Road and take a short walk back to the Preserve entrance. Check out the legend of Macedonia Church while you're at it. If you choose to drive back to the parking lot, you can expect some smaller ruts and mud holes. If you decide to park at the church or overnight, The Buckeye Trail Association asks that you notify them. Do not block the gate, or park at the first gate without notifying BTA.

The road leading back to the parking lot

Once you head back Macedonia Church Road, you will see signs for the Preserve on the left. The first entrance you come across has one of the camping sites as well as a primitive bathroom. If you continue walking down the road, you will find the parking lot and alternate entrance. This entrance also has several camping locations. Camping is only permitted for BTA members and thru hikers. Mushroom foraging is permitted, but absolutely no hunting. The Preserve and trail network are non-motorized.

History:

Wolff's Cabin

The Preserve is also rich in history. A short walk into the area leads you to a historic cabin built by Johan Wolff II, a German immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in the late 1700s and constructed the cabin in the early 1800s. He is the first Wolff descendant that died in Vinton County. He is buried in the nearby Wolfe Cemetery, located off Wolfe Cemetery Road, which can be reached via Sowers Road.
