Vinton County Discovery Trail

OVERVIEW

Experience Ohio’s Wonderland in the hills of Vinton County! Watch for wildlife while exploring thousands of acres of mature forest habitat in any of our seven state forests and parks. There’s more to find here than just a nature retreat, however, so let us be your guide to the local scene. Find adventure on the water or on horseback, discover truly unique shops and artisan wares, and experience authentic modern Appalachian culture and cuisine.

Download and print a passport card below, or pick one up either at the Discover Vinton County visitor center (104 W Main Street, McArthur) or at any of the destinations listed below. Fill out any six spaces by completing activities and purchases at participating local businesses, receiving a sticker for each. Finish your adventure at the Moonville Market in Zaleski, where you can choose a complimentary souvenir designed by local craftsman Scott Claypool.

    • Le Petit Chevalier Vineyards and Farm Winery is a family-owned and operated commercial grower of cold-hardy hybrids and classic native wine grapes. The tasting room provides food and award-winning dry and sweet wine options all grown and bottled on location. The vineyard grounds feature two bespoke, on-site vacation rentals. Located in the rolling hills of Vinton County in southeast Ohio, just minutes away from Hocking Hills State Park, the vineyard's mission is to provide quality wine grapes to our on-site winery. The winery features a suite of wines made from our own grapes. Visitors can discover the history of Eastern North American wine culture by sampling traditional varieties from the 1700s, all the way up to the most recent releases by university breeding programs. In 2025, Le Petit won an award for Best Red Wine in the State of Ohio for their Chambourcin, as awarded by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, and in 2026, the winery won Best Fruit Wine in the State of Ohio for their fabulous Apple wine.

    • Offering scenic, guided horseback rides through Zaleski State Forest near Lake Hope State Park. Enjoy the Coal Bucket Trail (1 hour) , the Moonville Tunnel Trail (2 hours), and the King Hollow Tunnel Ride (3 hours). While visiting Uncle Buck’s, stop in The Lady Buck Saloon for something to eat or a cold beverage. The Lady Buck Saloon is an air-conditioned/heated OLD WEST-style saloon and restaurant. Relax and enjoy the atmosphere before or after your trail ride. Uncle Buck's also host family BBQs with live entertainment most weekends. Event and banquet facilities are available for weddings, parties, or any other reason you have to gather!

  • Pumpkin Ridge Animal Sanctuary

Pumpkin Ridge Animal Sanctuary is a 100% non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue located in Vinton County, OH, in the Hocking Hills region. At the sanctuary, the well-being of the animals is the top priority. The Sanctuary is dedicated to providing a safe and loving environment for all of the animals who call it home. Horse rides at Pumpkin Ridge Animal Sanctuary are tailored to your group’s needs. From a child’s pony ride or gentle meadow stroll to more challenging wooded terrain, Pumpkin Ridge has a ride for you! Not up for riding? Book a farm visit to meet the animals instead! If you’re looking for a unique getaway near Hocking Hills, come stay with us at the farm! Our rentals include a one-bedroom cabin with a fully stocked kitchen, bathroom with tub and shower, and outdoor hot tub, as well as a private glamping site on the banks of a tranquil pond. When you stay at Pumpkin Ridge Animal Sanctuary, you’re welcome to visit the farm animals and help with volunteer work, or just enjoy the peace and quiet on your own.
